E-scooters represent an efficient use of space for our cities. And their affordability combats the ever-growing challenges of congestion, air pollution and transport inequality.

To reap these rewards, though, safe and correct e-scooter parking is a must. That’s why at Bolt, we’ve been busy partnering with city authorities to spread the message of responsible parking. In our most recent initiative, we launched ‘The Art of Parking Correctly’ in Oslo to encourage safe and responsible parking.

Parking an e-scooter correctly is a true art. And by following just a few simple guidelines, you can become a celebrated street artist — using a Bolt e-scooter as your brush. Here’s your guide to creating works of art with safe e-scooter parking!

Accessibility is one of the greatest benefits of e-scooting. With minimal upfront costs (compared to investing in a private vehicle), e-scooters are available to all socio-economic groups. But e-scooter accessibility shouldn’t come at the expense of a city’s accessibility.

E-scooters used and parked properly have the power to transform our urban spaces. But when parking guidelines aren’t adhered to, the effects can be felt by many.

Imagine an e-scooter left in the middle of the pavement.

For wheelchair users, pram pushers, delivery drivers and those with sight impairments (plus many others), this badly parked e-scooter is an obstacle. It has an impact in terms of lost time, potential accidents and sheer inefficiency in how we move around our cities.

The difference that can be made by parking an e-scooter neatly in a designated parking area — and not leaving it blocking a public pathway — is huge.

Here’s a selection of some common parking mistakes:

  • Blocking a pathway — this creates an obstacle for pedestrians and can present a danger for those with mobility impairments;
  • On private property — you wouldn’t usually hang around on someone’s private property, so neither should an e-scooter;
  • At a bus stop — the great thing about e-scooters is that they form part of a wider city transport network, but that shouldn’t mean blocking access to public transport;
  • In front of emergency exits — need we say more?;
  • Flat on the ground — a horizontal e-scooter not only blocks a pathway but it makes it harder for the next rider to start a journey.

Riders are able to report such issues through their Bolt app, which allows our team to act immediately.

The art of parking correctly

You’ve zipped across town to your destination in record time and at an affordable price. But now what? It’s time to park that e-scooter and create a masterpiece while being mindful of the general public and your fellow commuters.

Here are some things to remember when parking your e-scooter:

  • Use a designated parking zone or available bike racks! The map inside your Bolt app will show you where you should and shouldn’t park;
  • Lower the kickstand to keep the e-scooter vertical and prevent it from falling over;
  • Leave the e-scooter in a place where the next rider can easily reach it;
  • Consider your surroundings and use common sense. Find a location that doesn’t obstruct access or cause inconvenience for members of the public;
  • Park on a flat surface to ensure your safety and the next rider’s!
