This discount code shouldn’t even exist… But it does

March 04, 2020

Did you know that the gender pay gap in the United Kingdom is 20.8%? That means your nan, mum, sister, daughter, auntie, cousin, wife, girlfriend or bff statistically earn 20.8% less than men. That’s not okay.

Why do women get paid less?

The gender pay gap issue goes a lot deeper than someone merely thinking that women deserve a lower salary than men for their effort. Yes, even in 2020, discrimination is still a big factor in this, but there are at least three other contributors:

  • segregation: the number of women working in lower-paid jobs is high and there’s a higher proportion of men in higher-paid ones;
  • an imbalance between paid and unpaid hours: on average, women spend fewer hours doing paid work than men, but they also spend more hours doing unpaid work;
  • the glass ceiling: less than 10% of the world’s top CEOs are women.

And no, we didn’t come up with these stats ourselves, the European Commission has mapped out the full extent of the problem.

Why is Bolt talking about this?

Simple, International Women’s Day is coming up — the day we give thanks to all of the amazing women in our lives. It’s also become a focal point in the movement for women’s rights, and we want to do our bit to make sure that everyone is aware of this particularly unfair issue.

The Fair Fare

This upcoming International Women’s Day (Sunday, 8th March), we’re tipping the scales by offering all women an 20.8% discount on their next 10 rides.

So, calling all women! Please head on to our Instagram page to see how to claim the code.

And, in case you’re wondering, Bolt Drivers will always have equal earning conditions, regardless of their gender. Because anything else would just be wrong.

Happy International Women’s Day!

PS. We know that a 20.8% discount won’t fix the problem, but raising awareness of the issue is a good place to start, right?
